Many years ago when I first started to supervise people, I was told that I should be able and willing to do all of things that I would ask the people that I led to do.
As the years progressed, I started realizing that when I tried to operate that way, I was really limiting progress. Most of these people were blessed with skills and abilities that I didn’t have. So if we were going to do our very best, my job was to help each person find their sweet spots and then give them plenty of rope. Initially my ego got in the way causing me to reel them in. As years have gone by, I have been learning that it is far better to follow Henry Kaiser’s advice. The result is less stress and more accomplishment and satisfaction for all.
Isn’t it ironic that we can become smarter by recognizing and encouraging the smartness of others? So think for just a minute. How smart are you?
