IS HUBRIS THE SIGN OF A GREAT LEADER?

I wasn’t aware of the meaning of “Hubris” until recently.  Perhaps I’ve just lived a sheltered life.  In case you aren’t aware of what “Hubris” means, here’s the definition…

HUBRIS:  Excessive pride, self-confidence, and arrogance

While this is a season of politics, this blog is not meant to be political per se.  Rather, I hope that you will read it as a principle of humanity and leadership in any group of people that you can apply to your personal leadership style at work and at home.

It is a well-known principle that the leader of a group or organization establishes the culture of the organization or people group.  Lolly Daskal, the founder of New York City based “Lead from Within” Consulting Firm recently shared of blog on the danger signs of harmful excessive pride.  They are…
  • Conceit
  • Superiority
  • Arrogance
  • Narcissism
  • Selfishness
  • Entitlement
  • Self-absorption

With that in mind, here are a few questions to ponder…
  • What kind of leader do you prefer to follow in the organizations that you are involved with?
  • What kind of leader do you desire to be as you progress on your journey in life?
  • What kind of example, culture, and legacy do want to pass on to your children, and grandchildren?

Are you currently living with lots of joy in your life?  If not, would you like to?  If so, please realize that where you are at today is not your destination.  Rather, I’m sure that you’ve heard the factual saying that “Today is the first day of the rest of your live”.  Here are a few tips that will help you on your journey to find joy…

-Visualize what you would like your life to look like 5 or 10 years down the road
-Responsibility- Take responsibility for your life
-Choices- Make great choices that will lead you toward your vision
-Forgive- Stop holding grudges and forgive 70 times 7 times
-Listen to others with deep understanding before sharing your perspective

A friend of mine, life style coach, Catherine Walters, just held “The Joyful You Summit” in which she interviewed 22 guests on the topic of JOY.  If you are interesting, here is the link to Catherine’s interview with me…

CAN YOUR STRENGTHS BECOME YOUR WEAKNESSES?

Doesn’t the statement “Strengths carried to extreme become weaknesses” seem counterintuitive?  If you are interested in learning about what some of your weaknesses may be, think first about what your strengths are.

For instance, if your strength is…

Aggressiveness-  How does it affect other people if you become extremely aggressive?

Fun-loving- Might others get a bit tired if you are never or rarely serious?

Detail-oriented- If you overly dwell on details, is it possible that you might find it difficult to get much done while driving others crazy?

Laid-back- If you withdraw too much, is there a chance that you may get run over?

The list goes on.  While you shouldn’t try to do away with your strengths because they are given to you as part of your purpose, if you desire to improve your relationships, consider reeling your ‘gifts’ in a bit.  I’m guessing that you’ll begin finding more joy.

Like many things in life, moderation will typically help you find balance.
