We all need encouragement. (MENTORING)
We all need a encouragement, counsel and direction at times in our journey of life as it cannot be done alone. It takes having a trusted confidant to give us wise words to spur us on in the journey as life is fluid, always changing. and one cannot always have the ALL the answers to life situations. It is good and wise to have a sounding board! In my life I have the had the privilege to have Roger as a trusted confidant to give me course corrections and new insight for the different challenges I faced. Meeting on a regular basis and sharing what was transpiring in my life allowed us to discuss the different challenges and how God might want me to go versus my human intuition. In spending time with Roger he uses his own life experiences as well to give thoughts on how I might avoid “pot holes” on the road in my journey. Having a real voice..person to listen and give feedback is the wisest choice one can make in finding true Purpose and Joy in the journey. I count it a real blessing to have been on the CGC Deacon Board in 2008 when we began to meet with the Elders as a combined board, as CGC was going through a season of challenges and change. Working through those trials as a group of men, I began to realize my need for close connection with other men, and especially the need for a spiritual mentor. I was fortunate that you were a part of that group – given your passion for sharing your life lessons with others and your willingness to invest in the lives of others. Through trials of my own, in learning what it means to love my wife the way Christ loves the church and learning to be a father who leads with love, both lifelong journeys, a lifelong friend and mentor is fortunately what God had in store for me when he brought us together. Dugan Shelby- Lead Engineer (Scroll down for open letter from Dugan to Roger- Close friends) Roger Rocks! (BOOK & MENTORING)
It is my pleasure to recommend Roger as a mentor and author. I have participated and lead a Men's Group for about ten years now in Granger, IN. Roger came to our group about three years ago and has been a fantastic mentor to many men in the group, myself included. Roger has encouraged all of us to "live our way into a new way of thinking." His insights and real life experiences are outlined extremely well in his book and I really appreciate his transparency both in the book and in everyday life. Roger's ten step program will help anyone that wants to have a better and happier future. It is a very easy read and I believe people will be changed if they put only a few of his steps in their daily life. I am very grateful to call Roger a friend and I know when he speaks, it is straight from the heart. Tim Allie- Automotive Specialist 20+ Years in a Mentoring Relationship. (MENTORING)
I have meet on a regular basis with Roger Laidig for the past 20+ years in a mentoring relationship. The benefits to me are many: friendship, encouragement, a sounding board, and a mirror. As I journey through life, I believe we all need people who can speak truth into our lives – by nature I am selfish and have blind spots that keep me from seeing the ‘real me’. Roger’s ability to ask questions, help me think things through and give honest and direct feedback has allowed me to grow and develop in ways not possible without this mentoring relationship. Roger has helped me in my spiritual walk, helping me to address my ‘’pharisee ways”, with career decisions, and helped bring balance and joy to my life. My mentoring relationship with Roger has grown my relationship with God, my family and friends to a deeper level Ron Z- Bank Executive |
A Practical Book For Christian Healing And Growth (BOOK)
Finding Purpose and Joy: It's A Journey, is an 81-page guidebook written by Purdue adjunct professor and Christian counselor Roger Laidig. It is written in easy-to-read layman style, and the paperback version is printed in large text. Throughout the volume are simple, strategically-placed line drawings that support the life-changing lessons that Professor Laidig presents. He outlines his case for the necessity of finding purpose and joy in about 14 short chapters, labeled as "steps". There are many profound points shared in this peacefully-written and quietly-motivating book.
One point that Roger discusses is The Four Quadrants Time Management System. This is an effective way to corral our schedules, and he details it on pages 27-32. His explanation on page 34, of victimization, shows just how much insight he has into one of the significant origins of victim mentality, and how it manifests. If you want to get a spiritual handle on your memories of enduring mistreatment, you need to read this revelation. It will help you work with God to obliterate some negative effects of your past. You can believe that the truth always sets us free, one way or another. Professor Laidig has spoken a truth here that hit home for me. There is so much more in this book to help us grow towards healing and fulfillment.
In step 4, he explains how holding on to hurt and anger, as a result of mistreatment, causes us to continue to lose twice. I like how he reveals, in Step 5 a different understanding of what really happens when we insist on winning in every encounter that we have with anyone. In step 7, I enjoyed learning about the "white page" concept regarding personalities, and how it relates to the one black dot that can be present. Each time that I picked up this short book, I read something that my spirit quickly absorbed.
In every chapter Professor Laidig reveals at least one pertinent and interesting principle that will help us to find purpose and obtain joy in our lives. You will find this candidly and insightfully written, self-help book to be easy to comprehend and enjoyable to read. Additionally, you can use it as a workbook by referring to the "Points To Ponder" at the end of each chapter. This makes "Finding Purpose and Joy" a practical book for Christian healing and growth. Uplifting! (BOOK)
This is one of "I couldn't put it down books!" I enjoyed most the relevance to today's world and situations where we find ourselves.
I personally related to this book in very meaningful ways. After finishing the book, in one setting, I found myself using the phrases
without thinking! The book has really gotten into me! An example, "Look for the good in others" and "Treat others as they want to be treated". These are just two of the various examples. This book is a fine example of one who has experience in what he is speaking about and one who walks the talk. Amazon Customer

Open Letter to Roger from Dugan Shelby (MENTORING/CLOSE FRIEND)
It’s a privilege to have you as a friend and mentor. It’s hard to believe that we began that journey more than five years ago. On one hand, it seems like such a short time, but on the other, when I think of all the things we’ve worked through and challenges we’ve tackled together, in some ways it seems like a lifetime. We only invest in, and realize the value of true and lasting relationships, when we are growing and sharpening each other. And that’s exactly what I see in our relationship – consistently working out challenges that are real and relevant in our lives. A favorite author of mine, Robert Lewis, describes a mentor this way: “He is one who supports rather than competes with you. He is one who is primarily a cheerleader, not a critic – he sees what’s right, not wrong with you. He is one who seeks to encourage the development of your gifts while seeking to protect you from costly mistakes. He is one who admires and delights in you because he instinctively recognizes your value and untapped potential. He is a close confidant.” I cannot express the way you’ve invested in my life – been a true confidant and brother – better than these words do. Where other friends give in to the expediency of offering advice and work for the “quick fix” to life’s challenges, you model the concept of “fast is slow”, by investing the time to truly understand core issues and work on the tougher challenges of changing the heart. And that is the true model of how Christ taught us to live. However long it’s His plan for us to be able to get together and “sharpen the saw”, I’m thankful. That being said, I will be forever changed by our relationship, and those things that we’ve already had the privilege to work through together. Your friend and brother, Dugan |
