Are you feeling anxious about anything and spending time worrying about it?  Have you thought about how much energy you spend doing this?  Does this take away from time that you could wisely use on more productive things?  Would you like to change that?  If so, what are some things that you can do?
  • Make friends with people that have a calming presence.   Share with them. Try to laugh with them.
  • Write out what you are anxious about and clearly identify where it’s coming from.
  • Identify what is in your control that could improve your situation.  Take action on those things.
  • List the things that you have no control over and let them go, really.
  • Spend time being thankful for what you have rather than what you don’t have.
  • Pray and exercise faith in your Creator and His plan for your life.

If you believe in the truth of the Bible, claim Philippians 4:6-7 daily…

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Remember, we all have the gift to choose.  Why not choose peace?

ARE YOU WILLING TO ADMIT YOUR MISTAKES?

“THE BEST LEADERS ADMIT THEIR MISTAKES AND ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR WEAKNESSES”
Picture
When I started developing into leadership many moons ago, I struggled to know what the best leaders should look like.  In our capitalistic culture with short-term focus on profits it seemed like a good leader should be bold, act like they had a handle on everything, and be able to the job of any person that they are leading.

Forty years later I’ve come to believe that the best leaders are far more effective in building heart felt trust with their team by doing just the opposite of what I thought was right.  That is now being re-enforced by a book written by Andy Stanley titled “Next Generation Leader” that I am going through with a Small Men’s Group of leaders and fathers.

Right out of the chute Andy suggests that the best way for the leader to develop trust and bonding with the followers is being willing to admit mistakes and create a culture of taking responsibility rather than one of blaming one another.

The second significant point that he makes is that a great leader acknowledges their areas of weakness and instead focuses on enhancing things that they do well.  Then their responsibility is to develop their team to find their sweet spots to fill in the leader’s gaps.  The old adage ‘the jack of all trades is the master of none’.  And that’s true for leaders too.  By doing this it allows followers to feel much more valued in their jobs and if done right, allows them to invest in things that they are passionate about.  It ends up being a win-win-win for the leader, the followers, and the organization.  By the way, these principles apply very well in the family setting as well.

So if it’s been hard for you to admit your mistakes and acknowledge your weaknesses (that your followers already know about), why not try to do both and begin experiencing more purpose and joy in your life.

ARE YOU LIVING IN ALIGNMENT?  SHOULD YOU BE?

Have you thought much about what it means to ‘live in alignment’?  As I have journeyed through life, this phrase began to really resonate with me as I began seriously pursuing what my real purpose in life is.  For me, the main focus of this process has been consciously thinking about what I am really passionate about at a deep level.

Toward the end of my 30-year working career at Laidig Systems where I was heavily involved with leading the charge of sales and administration, this part of my journey started.  Our products were mechanical systems that were (and still are) engineered and manufactured locally, and installed worldwide.  I loved my career there and feel that I was very blessed to have had that opportunity.

As I began to approach retirement age, I began thinking more about what I would want to do with my newfound freedom.  I realized that what I really loved about working at Laidig wasn’t so much the equipment.  What I really enjoyed was working with the employees and helping them find their sweet spots where they could use their talents to flourish at work and in life.

So as people began asking what I was going to do in the future, it quickly became clear to me that I really desired to help others find purpose and joy in life.  In a few years it led me to writing the book “Finding Purpose and Joy, It’s a Journey”.   In doing that I had a life coach suggest that I really think hard about ‘living in alignment’ with my passions.   So now as I mentor people and they in-turn mentor me, I am living a dream.  Perhaps I should have pursued this earlier and probably would have if I wouldn’t have had appreciated my career so much.

So how about you?  Are you living in alignment with what you are passionate about whether it is in work or through a hobby?  If not, STOP AND THINK!  What’s holding you back?  Why not take a pause and re-evaluate your life?  Why not realize that you still have the freedom and ability to re-write your future so that it’s filled with purpose and joy.  If you don’t know how to start, please contact me.   It would give me great joy to help stimulate your mind to forge a new and exciting future.
